R22, R410A and R32 refrigerants

R22 (HCFC-22) may be found in older equipment and can deplete the ozone layer. R410A does not deplete ozone but has a high global-warming potential. R32 has a lower global-warming potential than R410A and is classified A2L, meaning lower flammability. Always use the refrigerant specified on the unit label; refrigerants are not interchangeable.

Possible signs of a refrigerant leak

• Reduced cooling: A dirty filter, restricted airflow, a sensor issue or another fault can cause the same symptom.
• Ice on pipes or the coil: Low refrigerant is one possibility; a dirty filter or restricted airflow can also cause icing.
• Longer run time or higher energy use: Thermostat settings, insulation, airflow and maintenance can also affect run time.
• Hissing near a connection: This may raise a leak concern, but the sound source needs to be checked.
• Oil marks around a joint: Have the connection checked for a possible leak; the mark alone is not proof.

How is refrigerant charged, and why is evacuation needed?

First check for leaks using an appropriate method; repair any leak and confirm the circuit is tight. If installation or repair has opened the refrigerant circuit, remove air and moisture with a vacuum pump as directed by the manufacturer. Evacuation is not a leak test or repair. Then weigh in the refrigerant type and amount specified by the unit label and manufacturer, accounting for pipe-length requirements. Never charge by guesswork. Trained technical personnel with suitable equipment should do this work.

These signs do not confirm low refrigerant on their own. A leak and airflow check should come before charging. Refrigerant work must follow the unit label and be carried out by a qualified technician with suitable equipment.

Air conditioner fault codes

Fault-code meanings vary by brand and model. Record the full code and unit model; no single code list applies to every air conditioner.
